A Roth IRA is a retirement savings option that is different than all other retirement options in that it allows you to withdraw money tax free at the age of 59.5. Currently the Roth IRA contribution limit is $5,000 if you’re 49 or under and $6,000 if you’re 50 or older. The main reason why people use a Roth IRA is because the money is taxed before placing it into a Roth IRA. When you do remove the money from a Roth IRA it is not taxed because your money was already taxed before you put it in. This helps to avoid the common issues found in 401k’s and other retirement options where you are taxed at the time you withdraw your funds. You can read about the basics of a Roth IRA here.
